“Did we actually just miss the Pacific altogether?” I ask James in disbelief. The reason for the question is that we’ve made a little change on board with a big result.

We’ve changed the acrylic on some of our portlights. Who knows how old they actually were, but possibly they were the original ones from 1990. Years and years of tropical sun, heat and cold have left them crazed; still letting through light but with no clear view to the outside surroundings.

The replacements, in contrast, allow us to check our position in an anchorage, glance at the sunset or even just check on which line is humming in the breeze – all things which were impossible with the old ones.

Same window, before and after.
